These are early days to talk about the JioPhone 3 but apparently, rumours have started coming. A Jio executive reportedly told a tech news website that the JioPhone 3 will be launched in June 2019. This bit, however, seems almost certain because June-July is when Reliance, which is Jio’s parent, usually hosts its annual meet and just like how it launched the JioPhone and the JioPhone 2, this time the meet may see the unveiling of the JioPhone 3. But there are other details that you should take with a pinch of salt. It has been rumoured that JioPhone 3 will be an all-touchscreen affair, will be more powerful and will be pricier.
According to a report in GSMArena, the JioPhone 3 will come with a 5-inch screen. This will mark a radical change compared to the JioPhone and JioPhone 2 that have a physical keyboard, even in the JioPhone 2 looks like a BlackBerry smartphone. Apart from a large screen, the JioPhone 3 will also reportedly get more powerful hardware. In fact, the Jio executive who revealed this information hinted that unlike the JioPhone and the JioPhone 2 that are feature phones with smart functionality, the JioPhone 3 may turn out to be a proper smartphone powered by Android Go.
The JioPhone 3 will also come with 2GB RAM, 64GB storage and support for microSD card. On the rear, it will get a 5-megapixel camera, and on the front, there will be a 2-megapixel shooter.
The better hardware means that the JioPhone 3 may cost more. For now, the rumours suggest that the JioPhone 3 may cost around Rs 4500, unlike the JioPhone 2 that sells for Rs 2,999.
For Jio, the JioPhone have been fairly successful devices. They are sold paired with a Jio SIM card and they allow users to access some smart features, like the ability to do WhatsApp chats via a special variant of the app, on the cheap. Both JioPhone and the JioPhone 2 run KaiOS.
However, of late there is a talk that Xiaomi may launch its first Android Go phone called Redmi Go in India around a price of Rs 4,000. The Redmi Go, which has already been launched in the Philippines, is a proper smartphone and if it is cheap enough in India, it will not only compete with the JioPhone 2 but will also score over the Reliance phone. It is possible that the JioPhone 3, when and if it launches, will help Jio counter the threat from the Redmi Go.
